Up North anglers cited catching 34 fish over limit on Detroit River

Five northern Michigan anglers landed quite a haul during a recent expedition on the Detroit River. In fact, too big a haul.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding Detroit River fisherfolk of the six-walleye daily limit after citing the group of anglers for exceeding it on Friday, May 8.

The anglers were caught with a combined 34 walleye over the limit after conservation officers saw the group north of Milliken State Park in Detroit on Friday morning, then saw them return later in the day and taking additional fish, according to a news release from the DNR.

The five anglers, who were staying at a rental property in Detroit, kept their legal daily limit of 30 total and received citations for the misdemeanor offense.

Todd Szyska, the DNR’s Law Enforcement acting captain for the south region of the Lower Peninsula, said people come from all over “to take advantage of the abundant fishing offered by the Detroit River.”

“Our walleye fishery is world-class in part because of the many respectful anglers who follow the daily limits,” he said in the news release.

Michigan’s fishing season started April 1 and runs through March 30, 2027. A license is required for anyone 17 and older fishing in Michigan waters.
