Burghardt Sporting Goods announced it will close its Fox Point location May 31 to focus on its headquarters in New Berlin.
The store, which is family owned and sells sports equipment and apparel, announced in an April 30 news release it would not renew its Fox Point lease at 8625 N. Port Washington Road in the RiverPoint Village Shopping Center.
In the meantime, everything at the Fox Point store is discounted by at least 20%, according to the company’s Facebook page.
The Fox Point store opened in 2012, but the original company goes way back, founded in 1881 as a stationery and bookstore in downtown Milwaukee. Eventually, it pivoted towards selling sporting goods.
In 2021, the business relocated its headquarters from Brookfield to an 80,000-square-foot building in New Berlin.
The Fox Point closure will allow the company to focus on New Berlin’s location, which is larger, more interactive and serves as it’s “home base,” according to the release. The New Berlin space includes batting cages, a turf field and a multi-purpose event space for anything from birthday parties to corporate gatherings.
At the same time, the company said it will also expand its delivery and shipping services, as well as increase access to uniform fit kits and other customer-focused enhancements.
To celebrate the new chapter, Burghardt’s will host a community event, called the “Home Base Bash,” this summer at the New Berlin location to showcase upcoming initiatives and offer activities for all ages. More information about the Home Base Bash and other updates will be shared soon, per the release.
“We’re building on the success we’ve seen in New Berlin,” fifth-generation owner Brian Burghardt said in the release. “It’s proven to be the stronger location, offering more space, more capabilities, and more opportunities to create a memorable experience for our customers.”
The release also noted that a sixth generation of the family is entering the business. Burghardt’s daughter Maggie has joined the company as a sales and marketing associate.
