Bitter cold, light snow in Milwaukee weather forecast

After around-freezing temperatures and a round of wet snow in Milwaukee Dec. 9-10, temperatures will drop significantly the rest of the week and into the weekend, meteorologists say.

Aidan Kuroski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, said weekend temperatures will dip to bitter cold — around minus 3 or minus 4 degrees Saturday, Dec. 13 and minus 5 to minus 13 degrees Sunday, Dec. 14.

However, the “real feel” temperature will be even lower, he said — in the double-digit negatives, potentially feeling as cold as minus 30 degrees Dec. 14.

“Fortunately, it’s happening over the weekend, so impacts will be primarily more localized,” he said. “Shelters, things like that will be potentially high volume … but you’re not going to see impacts to schools.”

Along with the negative temps, more snow is anticipated through the rest of the week. However, meteorologists say there’s not likely to be significant accumulation

One of those systems may be a “quick hitter” in southeastern Wisconsin the night of Thursday, Dec. 11, Kuroski said.

“There is a bit of uncertainty on where that’s going to end up tracking, but there is some potential there that we get some additional snow there,” he said.

Taylor Patterson, another meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, said that system isn’t likely to bring more than “a couple tenths of an inch” of snow to Milwaukee County.

After wet snow overnight Dec. 9-10, National Weather Service meteorologists and the city of Milwaukee warned people to be cautious while driving on slick roads.

“It’s a wet, slushy snow, and especially backroads are going to take a while to clear, so just take extra time if you’re going to be driving around today,” Patterson said.

Wind gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph Dec. 10 may also cause driving hazards, according to the National Weather Service.
