Bank of America plans Historic Mitchell St. site replacing Dollar Tree

Bank of America, which has been expanding into the Milwaukee area, is planning another new location on the city’s south side.

A former Dollar Tree store, 1300 W. Historic Mitchell St., is to be redeveloped as a Bank of America branch location – including a drive-thru ATM.

That’s according to new plans filed with the city Historic Preservation Commission.

The building’s exterior changes will need commission approval because it’s within a historic district.

The plans call for changes “designed to enhance functionality while remaining compatible with the existing historic structure,” according to the proposal.

Bank of America is completing its due diligence on the Mitchell Street site, said Diane Wagner, senior vice president-regional media relations. She told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel it’s “too soon to provide any further details.”

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Bank of America, among the nation’s largest bank holding companies, in 2025 announced plans to operate five Milwaukee-area locations.

It started construction in November for the first such location, at 7630 W. Good Hope Road.

The Good Hope Road location, along with Bank of America centers at 5240 S. 76th St., Greendale, and 8701 S. Howell Ave., Oak Creek, are to open in the third quarter, Wagner said.

Another location is planned for 5040 W. Fond du Lac Ave., Wagner said, but the timing for its opening has yet to be determined.

Bank of America says its expansion to Wisconsin is part of growth plans that will place it in more than 200 markets across 39 states by 2026.

Despite the rise of digital banking, Bank of America says many of its clients visit brick and mortar locations to discuss more complex financial needs.
