Sundown’s Jayden Sandlin finished fifth in the Class 2A tournament to lead the way for Lubbock-area participants at the UIL girls golf state championships this week.
Sandlin shot 80 on both days to finish with a 160 at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin. Mason’s Ainsley Burns won the individual title with a 142, and the Punchers also earned the team championship with 647 total, 55 strokes ahead of runner-up Spearman.
In the 3A competition at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin, Idalou’s Olivia Ortiz placed seventh with a two-round total of 164. She bounced back from an 86 in the first round to shoot a 78, which was the third-best score Tuesday. Shallowater’s Bristyn Currington also improved on her score to tie for 10th. She finished with a 166 after a 79 on the second day.
Klondike’s Grace Stevens totaled 186 to place sixth in 1A at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander.
Lubbock-Cooper’s Kaelyn Tutor, the area’s lone competitor in 5A, carded a 167 to finish 48th at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.
