What are you doing this weekend? That can be one of the most anticipated, and sometimes dreaded, questions that awaits us all at the conclusion of a busy week.
While the weekend finally provides us with that much-needed “me” time, it can sometimes be daunting trying to figure out exactly what is going on to participate in.
That’s why we went ahead and did the work for you and rounded up some of the top local events happening here in Abilene.
Here are three local events you won’t want to miss.
Rising Star — A South African Astronomy Journey
Spend a night under the stars at the Rising Star — A South African Astronomy Journey show at 6 p.m. Friday at the Morgan Jones Planetarium, 700 N Mockingbird Lane.
This immersive show takes viewers on an astronomical journey through the development of astronomy research in South Africa with unrestricted views of the 10-metre class Southern African Large Telescope and the most powerful radio telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, MeerKAT.
As the first of its kind to be produced in Africa, the show is open to all ages and aims to educate and excite audiences about South African astronomy while inspiring the next generation of astronomers.
Tickets for the event are $5 per person and can be purchased online or at the door.
Mothers Day Market
Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and there is no better way to celebrate than grabbing your mom and doing some shopping this weekend at the Mother’s Day Market outside Avana Bank, 2118 S Treadaway Blvd.
Held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, this outdoor shopping experience will feature local vendors and food trucks in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.
The event is free to attend, and more information can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
Hendrick Health Wellness Fair
Hendrick Health is holding its annual wellness fair 11 a.m.-4 p.m. this Sunday at the Mall of Abilene, 4310 Buffalo Gap Road.
This free community event will host over 30 health-related booths with demonstrations and interactive displays, and Hendrick staff will provide free health screenings, including blood pressure readings, cholesterol tests and grip strength tests.
Medical providers will also hold presentations covering topics related to digestive and bladder health, cancer prevention, and bone and joint care.
The fair is held alongside Hendrick Health’s 100th anniversary, celebrating the theme “for a healthier community”. More information and the schedule of events can be found on Hendrick Health’s website.
