Texas Tech football has had the college football spotlight burn brightly on it for the last week regarding a decision made in a courtroom that, as of now, has tremendous on-field implications for the 2026 season. Quarterback Brendan Sorsby finds himself in the crosshairs of college football fans across the country. With every new legal ruling that has given player X an additional year of eligibility, college football’s newest playbook (mainly for its quarterbacks) is one that no one is a fan of. It only highlights the need for rules that are enforceable across the sport. But if Sorsby does indeed end up taking the field for the Red Raiders, he will do so with a team with a ton of FBS experience. Cody Nagel of CBS Sports compiled data to analyze the most seasoned football teams taking the field in 2026. Let’s take a look at how they used the data to compile their rankings.
Using data from TruMedia, CBS Sports analyzed every FBS roster entering the season, ranking teams by total career experience while also mapping where that experience is concentrated across the roster. The dataset includes offensive and defensive snaps, games played, and starts accumulated throughout players’ FBS careers. Special teams contributors such as kickers, punters, and long snappers are not included.
Texas Tech football among nation’s best
Overall, Texas Tech ranks second in total snaps played heading into the upcoming season with 35,838. Only Virginia (39,158) has more for a team total. Sorsby’s experience carries significant weight here. If he never plays for the Red Raiders/removed from the data, the Red Raiders slide from second to seventh in career offensive snaps. However, much like the 2025 edition of the Red Raiders, the defense brings the most potential based on experience. According to Nagles’ report, no roster in the country features more players with at least 1,000 career defensive snaps than Texas Tech’s eight. Those include:
The defensive unit has a total of 18,766 snaps. Those eight players alone account for 12,513 career defensive snaps. How does that compare to the rest of the country? Just accounting for all of the highlight players, they possess more defensive experience than 106 FBS teams, including 37 Power Four programs, on their entire roster. In other words, 73% of Texas Tech defensive starters have more college football experience than 78% of entire defensive units found from coast-to-coast. With the uncertainty around Sorsby and quarterback Will Hammond still recovering from an ACL tear, this defense will be expected to do the heavy lifting until stability can be found at the quarterback position. But this unit is talented and experienced enough to keep the Red Raiders viewed as the favorite to win the Big 12 again.
