A Plymouth man was arrested Saturday after allegedly making a bomb threat and carrying drugs during a festival in southwest Michigan.
At about 11 p.m. Saturday, Van Buren County sheriff’s deputies responded to GingerMan Raceway after receiving reports that a person there was being disruptive and making threats.
The raceway, located in a rural area about 7 miles east of the city of South Haven, was hosting the Gridlife racing and music festival at the time, authorities said.
When deputies arrived, event security personnel told them that a man who had already been removed once from the venue had returned and was “making alarming statement,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post.
Security staff told deputies the man, later identified as a 35-year-old from Plymouth, was carrying a black bag that he had placed near the music stage. He allegedly told staff that the bag contained a bomb that hadn’t been caught by explosive-detecting dogs at the event.
When the man attempted to retrieve the bag, security personnel detained him and held him until law enforcement arrived.
It wasn’t clear whether the venue was evacuated. Messages left with the Sheriff’s Office and the Gridlife festival weren’t immediately returned.
Following a search, deputies determined the bag did not include any explosives. However, authorities found a white, powdery substance later determined to be ketamine, as well as a substance believed to be LSD.
Authorities said the suspect resisted as they arrested him. He was ultimately transported to the Van Buren County Jail.
Authorities were planning to charge him with offenses including false report of a terrorist threat, false report of a bomb threat, possession of ketamine, resisting and obstructing police officers and criminal trespass.
