Brendan Sorsby declares for NFL Supplemental Draft after legal battle

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has officially decided to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, according to a report from On3’s Pete Nakos. The Red Raiders quarterback’s decision comes just one week after retired Tarrant County judge Ken Curry granted Sorsby an injunction against the NCAA in Lubbock. The ruling would have allowed the fifth-year quarterback to play during the upcoming 2026 season after the NCAA declared him ineligible for impermissible sports betting violations. The injunction has sparked national debate among fans, media members, and college athletics officials for weeks, raising questions about NCAA authority, competitive integrity, as well as the future of eligibility enforcement in college sports.

According to multiple reports, the Big 12 Conference and commissioner Brett Yormark had been engaged in discussions with conference administrators regarding potential consequences if Texas Tech chose to play Sorsby after his court-mandated two-game suspension. Those discussions reportedly included possible financial penalties, restrictions involving the conference championship game, and concerns about television exposure for the football program.

In response to the growing scrutiny surrounding the situation, Texas Tech Athletics released a Texas Tech football defends Brendan Sorsby support in latest video last week featuring Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire, Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt, President Dr. Lawrence Schovanec, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Health Grant Stovall, and Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations Robert Giovannetti.

With Sorsby now opting for the NFL Supplemental Draft, the focus shifts to his professional future rather than a controversial return to college football. Sorsby was set to play a key role in Texas Tech’s much-anticipated 2026 season. His decision effectively ends months of uncertainty and drama surrounding his eligibility and removes what had become one of the most closely watched NCAA legal battles of the offseason. The deadline for players to declare for the Supplemental Draft is June 22.
