Texas A&M’s 2026 offense will heavily depend on redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed taking that next step after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns, but he also threw 12 interceptions, including four during back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
This offseason, Reed has gained healthy weight/muscle during his three-week training session at the D1 Training facility in Nashville, Tennessee, his hometown, while working with new quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch, who has known Reed since his early high school playing days, which should result in mechanical progress.
Overall, Reed’s decision-making, footwork, and ability to lead the offense in “big games” will determine his future under center, and while some in the Aggie fanbase were less than enthusiastic after the starting signal caller announced his return, it’s important to note that, in today’s college football landscape, experience at quarterback is absolutely vital for sustained success.
If Marcel Reed builds on his impressive play in 2025, the NFL will come calling. Focused on the 2027 NFL Draft, ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid placed the junior QB on the “Best of the rest” list of quarterbacks who could be drafted this time next year.
“Reed broke out as a redshirt sophomore, finishing last season with 3,169 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He has a thin frame at 6-1, 185 pounds, but he has a quick throwing motion and can release the ball with a quick flick of the wrist. He has never seen a throwing window he doesn’t like. Reed’s daring mentality can be a double-edged sword, as he has spurts of puzzling decision-making. His accuracy is also inconsistent, with his unpredictable ball placement making receivers work harder than should be necessary.”
As I stated above, better decision-making and improved accuracy should result in Marcel Reed not just matching or surpassing his 2025 numbers, but becoming a hot quarterback prospect, especially in a similar offensive system that allows him to utilize his dual-threat skill set.
