No. 9 Texas A&M (39-14, 18-11 SEC) ended the regular season with 18 wins in SEC play after winning two of three vs. Mississippi State last weekend, earning a double-bye in the SEC Tournament, and was set to play Auburn in the Quarterfinal round on Friday night. After just two innings, the Aggies trailed 5-0 and registered just two hits against the Tigers, who are by far one of the hottest teams in the country.
It’s clear that the Aggies are beat up, and while losing the first game in the SEC Tournament isn’t the end of the world for a team that is guaranteed to make the NCAA Tournament, but after entering the week as D1Baseball’s 8-seed, the Florida Gators, who the Aggies defeated on the road during the regular season, are currently trending upward and could overtake Texas A&M’s projected seed line.
Yes, head-to-head matters, but dropping two more spots in the RPI to No. 14, combined with finishing 4-6 over the last ten games, does not place the Aggies in the selection committee’s good graces before Monday’s announcement. Still, second-year coach Michael Earley believes that his team’s “body of work” speaks for itself, with six SEC series wins and just two losses in non-conference play.
Staying active this weekend, D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers released his updated NCAA Tournament projections, and, given Florida’s run, currently leading Georgia 6-0 in the SEC Tournament Semifinals, Texas A&M has now dropped two spots to the 10-seed, and out of the national seed conversation, for now.
Even more revealing, the Texas Longhorns, who Texas A&M swept this season, dropped to the 6-seed, and if this holds, paired with the Aggies dropping one more spot to the 11-seed, A&M would potentially face the Longhorns in the Super Regional Round with a College World Series bid on the line.
In Rogers’ latest projection, Texas A&M will host Cincinnati, UTSA, and Northern Illinois and could face 7-seed Alabama in Tuscaloosa if both teams advance out of their regional rounds. The Aggies can’t do anything to help their reśume, and will now wait to hear their postseason fate during Monday’s Selection Show.
