Suspect in deadly 2024 Lubbock road rage crash sentenced

A 21-year-old man will be on community supervision for 10 years after pleading guilty to a 2024 crash that killed a 68-year-old motorcyclist in 2024.

Juan Pablo Reyna Jr., who has been out on bond since Dec. 20, 2024, pleaded guilty to a count of manslaughter in the death of 68-year-old Monte Lynch, a second-degree felony that carries a punishment of two to 20 years in prison.

In exchange for his plea, his conviction was deferred and he was placed on community supervision for 10 years. He will also serve 30 days in jail every weekend starting on July 17.

He faces the full range of punishment if his community supervision is revoked. However, the charge against him will be dismissed if he successfully completes it.

A deadly crash in north Lubbock

Reyna’s charge stems from a May 31, 2024 Lubbock police investigation about a crash with injuries between a vehicle and a motorcycle near the intersection of Auburn Street and North Slide Road.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Reyna, fled the scene of the crash but was later found by patrol officers.

Meanwhile, Lynch was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators learned that Lynch and Reyna got into an argument just east of North Elkhart Avenue and Auburn Street, according to police officials.

Lynch left the scene in his motorcycle and Reyna chased him in his vehicle, catching up to Lynch near the intersection of Auburn Street and North Slide Road where he struck him and his motorcycle before fleeing the scene.

Lynch was found dead on June 19, 2024 in the 4700 block of County Road 6300 in Lubbock.

Medical examiners ruled his death a homicide, because they couldn’t rule out that the head injury Lynch suffered from the crash as a contributing factor in his death, said prosecutor Greg Jerman.

Lubbock police detectives obtained a warrant for Reyna’s arrest and he was apprehended Nov. 8, 2024 in the 700 block of East 34th Street. He was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center and bonded out more than a month later.
