U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is touting his conservative bona fides as the Republican U.S. Senate primary runoff in Texas as early voting gets underway.
Cornyn, R-Texas, has repeatedly been challenged on his record by his runoff opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has taken him to task over his criticism of President Donald Trump’s border wall, his relationship with Islamic groups and his “compassionate” stance on immigration.
But Cornyn’s campaign is asserting that the sitting senator’s record over more than two decades in the U.S. Senate speaks for itself.
“Texans deserve facts, not campaign noise,” a news release from Texans for Cornyn stated. “Sen. John Cornyn has been delivering conservative results for Texas by securing the border, supporting law enforcement, confirming conservative judges, defending religious liberty, and advancing the America First agenda alongside President Trump.”
Cornyn’s campaign rolled out a short list of the senator’s conservative achievements, including the following:
The campaign also noted that Cornyn is backed by the National Border Patrol Council and Pastor Max Lucado, further evidence of his strong stance on border security and faith.
“John Cornyn does not just talk about conservative values, he has fought for them in the Senate year after year,” the campaign said. “As this election approaches, Team Cornyn is asking conservatives across Texas to stand with proven leadership and a record that delivers real results.”
Cornyn has ground to make up if he hopes to topple Paxton, who has consistently come out on top in multiple polls. The winner of the May 26 runoff will advance to the Nov. 3 General Election to face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico.
