There are tournament weekends in golf that seem to come full circle and quietly reshape a career arc. For former Texas Tech standout Ludvig Åberg, this was one of those weekends. Åberg finished tied for fourth at the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, sharing the position with Justin Thomas and Matti Schmid. After a composed, relentless four-round stretch that ended at 5-under-par, his scorecard told the story of a player refusing to blink under pressure with rounds of 72, 66, 68, and 69. Throughout the tournament, Åberg had steady hands, even through shifting winds and rising stakes.
The PGA Championship marks the 14th top-five finish of his young professional career. It’s also only the second time he has done it on major championship soil. The other came at the 2024 Masters, where he finished runner-up to Scottie Scheffler. At Aronimink, Åberg never quite broke the tournament open, but he never drifted either, staying within the frame of contention. In a field packed with star-studded champions and rising threats, Åberg remained anchored in the upper tier.
The championship win belonged to England’s Aaron Rai, who closed at 9-under to claim the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday afternoon. But behind that headline, the former Red Raider was right there in the mix when it mattered most. For a player still early in his major championship journey, the pattern of repeated presence for Åberg is beginning to matter.
The next major arrives quickly with the U.S. Open, set for June 18–21, along with some Signature events leading up to the Open. From now on, Åberg will walk into tournaments not as a surprise contender, but as a known variable. Texas Tech once watched him develop on the courses. Now, the golf world is watching him build something more elusive than trophies: a sense of inevitability.
