Texas A&M is looking to make its way back to Omaha after missing the postseason altogether in 2025, and that journey begins with a decisive move from head coach Michael Earley as the NCAA Regionals get underway. For the Aggies to stay alive in the postseason picture, they’ll need a strong month from their pitching staff, and Earley made a clear statement with his choice to open the tournament.
On Thursday, Earley confirmed that redshirt junior Shane Sdao will get the start against the Lamar Cardinals in Texas A&M’s NCAA Regional opener. There had been some uncertainty surrounding the Game 1 decision, especially with Aiden Sims dealing with minor back discomfort and Ethan Darden stepping into the rotation over the past few weeks while Sdao worked in relief.
Despite his struggles this season, Sdao has continued to flash the raw tools and upside that once made him a projected MLB Draft prospect, even while working his way back from injury. After spending some time in the bullpen, he now gets a chance at redemption on one of the biggest stages of the year.
According to Earley, the left‑hander has the full confidence of the coaching staff, and the Aggies believe he can set the tone as they begin their push through the NCAA Regionals.
Texas A&M will face Lamar on Friday at 3:00 p.m., which will air on the SEC Network.
