Scouting report on Cowboys' latest UFL gamble, can raw Speed help?

The Dallas Cowboys added UFL standout Ameer Speed, formerly of the Houston Gamblers, to their stable of defensive backs, continuing their trend of signing UFL talent. This strategy has proven successful in the past with players such as All-Pro kicker Brandon Aubrey and All-Pro returner Kavontae Turpin. Could Speed be yet another hidden gem from the UFL?

Speed’s playing style for the Houston Gamblers was characterized by his exceptional physical attributes, measuring 6-foot-3 and weighing 215 pounds, coupled with impressive 4.34 speed. After joining the team midseason, he leveraged his large frame and long arms to thrive in press-man coverage, effectively disrupting wide receivers at the line of scrimmage while utilizing his straight-line recovery speed to negate any vertical advantages.

In just 5 games, Speed delivered outstanding defensive statistics, accumulating 16.0 total tackles (11 solo, 5 assisted) and two pass breakups, all while showcasing the aggressive, block-shedding mentality typical of a hybrid safety against the run. His readiness to play downhill and make solid tackles in open space established him as a prominent boundary defender, revealing a versatile skill set that quickly attracted the attention of the Cowboys.

40-yard dash: 4.34 seconds

10-yard split: 1.56 seconds

Before joining the UFL, Speed was a 6th-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Michigan State (having also played at Georgia). He spent time in the NFL with the Patriots, Colts, Bears, and Texans, primarily playing a special teams role before making the jump to the spring league. In his three seasons in the NFL recorded 11 tackles (9 solo tackles) and a tackle for loss in seventeen games.

Where does he fit on the Cowboys?

Ameer showcases impressive size, physicality, and straight-line speed under 4.4 seconds, along with the versatility to play both in the box and on the boundary, making a significant impact in run defense. However, his size results in less fluid hips, which could make him vulnerable against quick, agile receivers; he is better suited to cover larger receivers or the occasional tight end. Additionally, his ball production has been minimal, as he has yet to record an interception at any level, struggling with ball tracking and locating the football when his back is turned to the quarterback.

To secure a spot on the Cowboys’ 53-man roster, his best chance would be to excel primarily as a special teamer and run support player. He will face competition from safeties Markquese Bell and Julius Wood, as well as cornerbacks Derion Kendrick and Trikweze Bridges, all vying for the CB 5/6 or safety 5 positions. Ameer must make his presence felt and capitalize on his recent experience from spring ball, ensuring he is in peak football shape.
