Seventy-five days until Texas kicks off against Texas State and it’s time to breakdown the wide receivers. The Longhorns added Cam Coleman, the top transfer portal player, to the WR room along with Ryan Wingo and Emmett Mosley this offseason. The starting trio are known commodities but how is the depth shaping up?
Given the versatility of the group, I didn’t add specific positions but here’s how I see he the pecking order right now:
Starters: Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo & Emmett Mosley III
It feels clear these three will lead the way for the Longhorns this season. Coleman was the prized offseason addition and has gained rave reviews since showing up in Austin. Ryan Wingo had a frustrating start to last season but finished strong and figures to be a perfect WR2 to Coleman. Finally, Emmett Mosley rounds out the trio and can be the glue between Coleman’s vertical and Wingo’s horizontal attacks. The starting trio is one of, if not the best in the country. If the pass protection is strong, No. 8, 1 and 3 should be running wild this season.
Backups: Sterling Berkhalter, Kaliq Lockett & Daylan McCutcheon
Moving the second line, Berkhalter, Lockett and McCutcheon have positioned themselves nicely. Berkhalter came in with more experience than the rest of the depth players combined and has proven he can contribute this season. Lockett, despite the injury, figures to factor into the rotation behind both Coleman and Wingo throughout the season. McCutcheon will be that true slot WR for Texas, backing up Mosley, and if the spring “game” is an indication, he’s ready to contribute as well. We’ll see how much Sarkisian rotates at WR but I expect the talent of this group to force his hand.
Gadget Options: Ryan Niblett, Jermaine Bishop Jr.
These are the two wildcards of the group. Ryan Niblett will be used as a RB as well and Jermaine Bishop Jr. is currently getting reps in the secondary. Both are too talented with the ball in their hand to not get used on offense throughout the season. I expect both to get chances for yards after catch and both to make the most of those chances.
Depth Options: Kohen Brown, Chris Stewart, Rett Anderson
Finally, the trio you’re unlikely to see outside of a blowout situation. Kohen Brown and Chris Stewart, the freshman duo, have gained rave reviews this offseason. The duo seem to be angling toward consistent playing time in 2027 but it might be difficult to crack the rotation this season. Rett Anderson is the veteran of this group, the former walk-on, that hopefully will get plenty of chances in Texas wins in his final season.
Overall Thoughts
This group can not only be the best WR group in the country this year, but one of the best in Texas history. Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Emmett Mosley’s abilities fit together like puzzle pieces. Coleman is the 1-on-1 nightmare the Texas CFP teams had, Wingo is the YAC specialist that’ll play off Coleman’s ability and Mosley is the glue between the two.
Behind the starting trio, there are some unknowns. That being said, Berkhalter brings experience while Lockett, McCutcheon and Bishop add elite talent. I expect, out of those four, Texas finds at least two real contributors. They’ll provide relief for the starting trio and will turn this unit from great to special. There are some positions of question for Texas in 2026 but wide receivers is not one of them.
