The Houston Rockets could be gearing up to poach a key contributor from the Los Angeles Lakers, who eliminated them in last year’s NBA playoffs. According to NBA insiders, not only is Houston’s interest in Smart strong, but the Rockets are said to be favorites in landing the former Celtics guard, according to Dan Woike of The Athletic.
While Smart’s relationship with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka could certainly play a role in his decision, Houston’s rumored multi-year deal offer for the former Defensive Player of the Year Award winner could be a deciding factor. Of course, to sign with the Rockets, he’d first have to decline his current $5.4 million player option with the Lakers.
Last season with Los Angeles, Smart once again showcased his hustle and winning impact, averaging 9.3 points, three assists, 2.8 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 0.4 blocks. After playing fewer than 55 games in his last two seasons combined, Smart’s durability was also on display, suiting up for 62 games, 54 of which he started. While his shooting numbers have never been among the strongest in the league, Smart’s infectious energy and defensive presence could make him a perfect fit to join the Rockets’ backcourt at a reasonable price.
