Newark man faces new charges after escape prompts school lockdown

A Newark man who police said escaped after a court appearance faces new criminal charges.

Calvin Jenkins, 21, pleaded not guilty to escaping custody during a May 12 hearing in Licking County Common Pleas Court. In court records, police allege Jenkins fled around 11 a.m. April 29 from Licking County Municipal Court, leading to a districtwide lockdown of Newark City Schools.

Jenkins was in court that day after prosecutors allege in court records that he violated a protection order. The court sentenced him to 180 in jail, with credit for 35 days already served.

A deputy walked Jenkins to his cruiser in the underground area of municipal court after the April 29 court appearance. Jenkins ran from him after seeing the garage door open, prosecutors alleged in court records.

The deputy couldn’t catch him, but police arrested him around noon near Locus and Fifth streets, Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said at the time.

Newark City Schools implemented an awareness-level lockdown shortly after 11 a.m. April 29 after police began them. Classes continued but no one was allowed in or out of district buildings until the lockdown lifted around noon.

Jenkins’ next court appearance on the escape charge had not yet been scheduled as of April 12, records show. The court set his bond at $100,000, and he remained in Licking County jail in lieu of the bond.
