It seems as though everyone has an opinion about Brendan Sorsby and what the NCAA should do with the gambling probe. The Texas Tech quarterback was denied reinstatement by the NCAA, which wasn’t a shock to anyone who is following this storyline. It was always going to be handled in the courts.
Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec responded with a letter to the Texas Tech community condemning the actions of the NCAA when their own Chief Medical Officer has called for a “harm reduction approach” when it comes to gambling among student athletes. It is increasingly problematic when you factor in how much money the NCAA itself is making off gambling partnerships. It is everywhere.
This was a point that ESPN contributor Paul Finebaum made on Wednesday when he joined ‘Get Up’.
“I think he should have been suspended for a couple of games, but to keep him out for the whole season, I think is wrong,” Finebaum stated in his appearance. “While what he did on paper, Greeny, is terrible, we’re talking about the NCAA. The most hypocritical organization in the history of mankind, coming down on somebody for gambling while they have their own side gambling deals, and while gambling is pervasive everywhere. So, a three-game suspension, perhaps, keeping him out for the whole season, is wrong.”
I definitely didn’t have Paul Finebaum going to bat for Texas Tech and Brendan Sorsby on my offseason bingo card. He makes valid points on the whole situation. However, since he broke a rule on gambling, there needs to be some level of punishment. However, what that punishment should be is well above my job title.
As it stands now, Sorsby will have his day in court, and that begins on Jun. 1.
