For the majority of this offseason, the Texas Tech Red Raiders have been at the center of attention for much of the college football world, with the Brendan Sorsby saga blowing up over the past few weeks. However, it appears that the focus is now starting to turn elsewhere.
It appears that the Cincinnati Bearcats and what transpired during the two years that Sorsby was with the program are now the focus. According to multiple reports, the NCAA has sent a letter of inquiry to the University of Cincinnati. This letter does not necessarily signal wrongdoing, but it is the start of an investigative process over possible rules violations, one that often is a collaborative effort with the school itself.
Sorsby, who played his last two years of college football for the Bearcats, admitted to wrongdoing in the form of gambling, placing thousands of wagers for over $90,000, including betting on his own team while with the Indiana Hoosiers.
School officials expect to respond to the inquiry, presumably with documentation and details that the NCAA requested, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Ross Dellenger.
During his brief time at Texas Tech, Sorsby was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for his wrongdoing, but was later granted a temporary injunction by a local judge, making him eligible for the 2026 season. After significant blowback, though, Sorsby and the Red Raiders decided to mutually part ways, with expectations that Sorsby would enter the NFL supplemental draft.
The NFL soon after denied Sorsby’s entry, though, leaving him with very few options going forward until the 2027 NFL Draft. While this inquiry won’t change anything for Sorsby, it may take some of the heat off of Texas Tech, depending on what comes of it.
