Following a Week 1 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners in Bryan-College Station, Texas, a national college football personality has the Aggies ranked higher than the updated US LBM Coaches Poll.
In Fox Sports analyst RJ Young’s Week 2 top 25 rankings, Texas A&M was placed at No. 20 on the list behind Iowa State. Young had many different opinions on college football programs around the country, including Oklahoma at ninth. Texas and Alabama’s losses on the road in Week 1 cost them multiple spots, dropping the Longhorns to No. 5 and the Crimson Tide to No. 22 in Young’s latest college football rankings.
While Texas A&M’s performance against UTSA does not deserve a gold medal, the Aggies still showed promise and flashes from positions and units that struggled during last year’s campaign. With the first game of his second year at the helm, Aggie head coach Mike Elko led his team to a considerably dominant performance against an explosive UTSA program in Week 1.
Compared to Young’s listing after the conclusion of the first week of college football action, the AP Poll Top 25 has the Aggies ranked at No. 19 and the US LBM Coaches Poll placed Elko’s squad at No. 22 in the country.
While the argument could be made to bump the program up a few spots compared to performances from other programs, Texas A&M has much to improve upon from the win over the Roadrunners. For just the third time since Elko was named the head coach, the Aggies allowed over 200 yards rushing against UTSA last Saturday.
If this year’s squad aspires to silence all doubt and shatter the ongoing AP Poll curse, the run defense will need to dramatically improve before they travel to South Bend, Indiana, to face Jeremiyah Love and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish next week.
Before Texas A&M can get to Week 3, the task at hand resides in College Station on Saturday against Utah State.
