An Amarillo resident who had been reported missing drowned at Lake Meredith over the weekend, authorities confirmed.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to Harbor Bay at Lake Meredith in reference to a report of a missing person on Saturday, July 25 at approximately11:20 a.m.
After Moore County deputies arrived, they were informed the missing person had gone for a swim at approximately 1 a.m. from the south bank of the harbor, to meet up with another group on the north bank of the harbor.
A person at the scene told authorities that when he awoke later that morning, the missing person had not returned to camp. He said he went to the north bank to check on him and found he had never come to the campsite.
Moore County deputies, along with agents from Texas Parks and Wildlife, National Park Services, Hutchinson County and the Texas State Game Wardens began searching for the missing individual.
At approximately 12:51 p.m., a body was located in the water near Blue West, which was confirmed to be the missing person.
He was identified as John Gabriel Navarro of Amarillo.
Navarro’s body was recovered, and investigators did not observe any signs of foul play involved, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
The body was sent for an autopsy, and the investigation remains ongoing.
