AUSTIN — Senior year isn’t always sunshine and roses. That’s especially true under a deluge of expectation.
Still, Kamryn Dyck never let that be a hindrance.
The Loop senior built quite the reputation over the past three years. In many ways, the burnt orange confines of Mike A. Myers Stadium became her dominion.
Being the state’s fastest sprinter will do that.
Dyck entered her final high school meet Saturday as the three-time Class 1A champion in the 100 meters. She had two golds and a silver in the long jump, to boot.
Dyck’s curtain call wasn’t picture perfect, but she couldn’t help but leave with pride.
The Loop standout ran the 100 in 12.32 seconds to earn silver behind Veribest’s Chloe Becker. Becker set a 1A state-meet record in 12.20 to unseat Dyck.
“Honestly, I’m sad that I didn’t win, but the girl that won, she deserved it with everything,” Dyck said. “She’s been working so hard, and I am so very proud of her. For me personally, I’m just proud of myself for even making it this far because this season has just been tough for me in general since I’m a senior.”
Dyck didn’t get a chance to add a fourth long-jump medal. She said that was among her mental hurdles, along with the acceptance her time in Loop was nearing its end.
Her track career isn’t over, though. Dyck will go on to join the program at Lubbock Christian University. If the next chapter is anything like her exploits at Loop, she’s in for quite the ride.
“The only way I can describe (my career) is I’m proud,” Dyck said. “I know how hard I’ve worked this whole year. I know that I’ve proven so many people wrong, that I can do it, that I can make it this far. And I know I’m gonna continue to do great and get better when I go to LCU.”
Dyck’s impact on her hometown won’t be forgotten, either.
“I’m just proud I got to put Loop on the map,” Dyck said, “because it’s such a small school no one ever knows. I’m proud that I got to do that for me and for them.”
