COLUMBUS — The OHSAA state track and field hits its home stretch over the weekend at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
On June 6, the Division I and II competitors will hit the track for the first time, while the evening session will include the finals for Division III.
June 7 will close out the state meet with running finals for Division I and II

Tallmadge’s Hay and Bontempo win state titles at OHSAA track meet
The Division II state meet was a big one for the Blue Devils.
Tallmadge’s Allison Hay completed a dominant season in the 800-meter run, winning the state title in a time of 2:12.21
A few minutes later, Tallmadge’s Anthony Bontempo would join Hay atop the podium. Bontempo won the state title in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8 inches.
Two Greater Akron relay teams also brought home gold from the state meet.
In the girls 800 relay, Wadsoworth’s quartet of Jessica Stoops, Ashley Valatka, Brooke Haude and Hailey Otradovec won the state title in a time of 1:39.67.
Otradovec almost added another state title in the 400, but was nipped at the line and finishes second in 55.51 seconds.
Twinsburg closed out the Division II state meet by winning the 1,600 relay. The Tigers team of Nicole Smith, Autumn Besett, Brooke Jones and Teighlor Humbert won in 3:53.83.
In the field events, Hudson thrower Drake Vander Cica set a new school record with a throw of 62-½. That earned him state runner-up honors.
Also finishing as state runner-up was Nordonia’s Joseph Filisky in the 300 hurdels, despite running the first heat of the timed finals. Filisky’s time was 38.32.
Other Greater Akron All-Ohio performances in Division II included the following:
Hudson’s Makenna Bode takes third in pole vault at OHSAA state meet
Hudson’s Makenna Bode vaulted her way near the top of the podium in the Division II girls pole vault competition. Bode was clean early, with no misses before 12 feet. At 12 feet, 2 inches, Bode cleared the height on her third attempt.
Bode was unable to clear the bar at 12-6 or 12-10, which would have been her personal record. She finishes third behind Granville’s Anne McCraken and Cincinnati Turpin’s Claire Iaciofano.
OHSAA state tournament on schedule for Division II events
After yesterday’s delays, the OHSAA state track and field tournament is back on schedule for its final session with Division II.
The girls pole vault competition is off and running. At 1 p.m. finals in the girls discus, boys shot put, girls long jump and boys high jump will begin.
Finals in the running events will begin at 1 p.m. including timed finals in the boys 400-meter dash and both genders in the 300 hurdles, 200 and 1,600 relay.
Woodridge boys take second Division III at OHSAA state track meet
After all the weather delays, Woodridge boys still secured themselves a trophy in Columbus.
Woodridge finished second in the Division III boys race with 38 points. The Bulldogs held the lead heading into the final race, but a fifth-place finish by Cleveland Glenville gave them the title with 41 points.
Woodridge got an individual state title from Ben LeBay, who put up a personal best time of 4:13.5 to win the 1,600-meter run.
Elsewhere in Division III, Buchtel girls nearly broke its own state record in the 800-meter relay. The team of Jada Davis, Joslynne Bushner, Devonna Smith and Miniya Mitchell won the state title in the 800 relay in 1:39.28.
Greater Akron will next see action June 7 with Division II running events at 1 p.m.
Restart time set for OHSAA state track meet
The state meet is back on. Door reopen to the public at 8 p.m. First race back will be the Division II girls 3,200 at 8:30 p.m.
Division II finalists set for completed events at OHSAA state track meet
Given the weather issues, Division II will have its boys 400-meter run, as well as 300 hurdles, 200 and 1,600 relay will be run as seeded and timed finals.
Prior to the weather delay, the Division II semifinals did run for most of the events.
Thus, qualifiers for the Division II finals June 7 include the following:

OHSAA reschedules state track and field meet due to weather issues
The Ohio High School Athletic Association has issued the following statement:
“Due to severe weather, we are making the following modifications to the schedule for the remainder of the OHSAA Jesse Owens State Championships.
The remaining Division 2 running events, with the exception of the 3200, are postponed and will be contested on Sunday beginning at 1 PM and following the existing time schedule. The running events that have not yet completed preliminaries, starting with the Boys 400, will be reseeded as timed finals per NFHS regulations.
Start time for the events that are still planned for this evening will be determined later, as weather conditions allow, but will not resume before 7:45 PM. The Division 2 3200 will be the first event competed when the meet resumes this evening. The seated events and the Division 3 finals will still be contested this evening.
[Division 1] Group H field events are being rescheduled for Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with check-in scheduled for 7:30 AM. Group I and J will proceed on a rolling schedule following the completion of the preceding field events. Field event participants that were already scheduled for Sunday should still report at the previously scheduled time.
D1 running events are planned to take place as scheduled tomorrow.”

OHSAA state track meet back under weather suspension
Inclement weather has returned to the Columbus area, suspending the OHSAA state track and field meet for the second time today. The meet will resume 30 minutes after last observed lightning sighting.
Tallmadge takes third in girls 3,200 relay at OHSAA state track and field meet
It took the best performance in Division II history to keep Tallmadge’s 3,200-meter relay team from the Division II state title.
Tallmadge’s team of Makalya Martuccio, Mackenzie Martuccio, Tepanga Ross and Allison Hay finished their season in the 3,200 relay with a third-place finish in 9:16.02. Champions Loveland (9:05.14) and runner-up Big Walnut (9:08.3) each broke the Division II state record.
“It was hard,” Hay said. “They had a big lead and they each ran really, really great. I was just trying to hold our place.”
“It all worked out well,” Ross said. “We’re satisfied. We’re sad its our last race together.”
Two other Suburban League teams reached the podium in the girls 3,200 relay. Hudson took sixth in 9:30.49, while Wadsworth was eighth in 9:32.99.
In the boys Division II 3,200 relay, Revere got a much better trip than it did at the regional meet. The result was a school-record time of 7:54.99 and a fifth-place finish. Lexington won in 7:47.59.
“I believed in my boys. They did great,” said Revere anchor Will Wells. “I went out conservative in the first lap and then let it all hang out on the section. It worked out well and it’s awesome.”
Hoban’s Dereon Cooper takes third in shot put at OHSAA state track and field meet
After missing her first two years, Hoban’s Dereon Cooper took full advantage of her first trip to state.
Cooper finished third in the Division II girls shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 6 inches. It wasn’t quite her personal best, as Cooper is already looking forward to next season.
“I can imagine it,” Cooper said. “I’m really happy. I’ve been working really hard and I know I can do better. I’m going to be working on indoor season and over summer for next year.”
Elsewhere in the Division II field events, Walsh Jesuit’s Caterina Cavallaro tied for sixth in the girls high jump with a leap of 5-2.
Meanwhile in the boys high jump, Walsh’s Sam Barrett saved his best leap for last. Barrett scored a personal best leap of 22-9 to finish in fourth place.
Division I athletes complete runs at OHSAA state track and field meet
Greater Akron’s two Division II state qualifiers have each completed their events.
Wadsworth’s Jimmy O’Connell competed in both Division I hurdle events, but did not reach the finals. in the 110-meter hurdles, O’Connell finished 17th in 15.49 seconds, while in the 300 hurdles, he finished 16th in 41.11.
Stow’s Madelyn O’Brien competed in the 3,200 final. She finessed 17th in a time of 11:30.54.
Division II field events are underway. The Division II running events will begin shortly.

The OHSAA has announced the state track and field meet will resume at 1:30 p.m. Gates will open to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m.
Lightning delay at OHSAA state track and field meet
The OHSAA state track and field meet has been suspended due to lightning in the area. The meet will be resumed 30 minutes after the last lightning sighting.
Woodridge’s Josephine Mayer just misses All-Ohio finish at OHSAA state track meet
Woodridge’s Josephine Mayer continued a family tradition of throwing at the state meet. However, she finished just shy of reaching the podium.
Mayer advanced to the finals in the girls discus with a throw of 115-1 on her second throw. In finals, she was unable to improve on that throw and finished ninth. Perry’s Emily Mechenbier won the title with a throw of 154-10.
Buchtel’s Jordan Holloway competes at OHSAA state track and field meet
Buchtel’s Jordan Holloway opened day 3 of the Division III state meet by competing in the shot put. Holloway’s best throw of 50 feet, 10¼ inches places him 12th after the preliminaries and did not advance him to the finals.
In the Division III girls discus, Woodridge’s Josephine Mayer advanced to the finals with a throw of 115-1.
