The U.S. men’s national team’s World Cup run came to a crushing end at Lumen Field in Seattle after a stunning 4-1 loss to Belgium.
Although the United States appeared stronger than Belgium for much of the tournament, the men’s team ultimately fell short, resulting in their elimination from the World Cup. The matchup marked a rematch of the 2014 Round of 16, when Belgium defeated the U.S. 2-1 in Brazil.
Charles De Ketelaere gave Belgium the lead just nine minutes in — then Malik Tillman equalized in the 31st minute off a deflected free kick, but De Ketelaere headed home just two minutes later to restore Belgium’s lead.
In the 57th minute, disaster struck for the USMNT. Matt Freese took too long on a ball outside his box and was dispossessed, with Hans Vanaken scoring into an open goal and Tim Ream unable to prevent the goal. Romelu Lukaku added gloss to the result in second-half stoppage time.
