A driver and passenger in a pickup truck were killed while speeding and unsafely switching freeway lanes before hitting two cars and crashing into a concrete pole on Loop 375 in far East El Paso, police said.
The three-vehicle collision occurred at 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, on the southbound lanes of Loop 375 near the exit to Interstate 10, stated an El Paso Police Department news release by spokeswoman Detective Judy Oviedo.
Driver, Isaac Ibarra, and his passenger, Fabian Alexander Alonzo, both 24 and from El Paso, died of their injuries in the crash, police said.
An investigation by the EPPD Special Traffic Investigations Unit found that Ibarra was driving a white 2017 Toyota Tundra at a high speed and passing other vehicles heading south on Loop 375, police reported.
The pickup “cut across all lanes of traffic” and side-swiped a white 2022 Genesis car, driven by Adrian Gunjardo, 20, before rear-ending a black 2013 Nissan Maxima, driven by Adrian Gonzalez, 32, police stated. The impact caused the truck to spin and crash into the freeway center barrier and a concrete pole.
The extent of injuries, if any, to the drivers of the other cars was not disclosed.
Speed and an unsafe lane change were cited as factors in the fatal crash, which remains under investigation, police noted.
The deaths were the 29th and 30th traffic fatalities in El Paso this year compared with 34 at the same time in 2025, according to Police Department numbers.
