The Texas A&M Aggies had some brutal injury luck during the Maroon & White Game when senior linebacker and team captain Daymion Sanford suffered an injury that forced him to be carted off the field.
He is coming off a breakout season for the Aggies and was expected to be a key part of the defense before the injury. There is still uncertainty about when he could return in 2026, with Elko saying “no” when he was asked by On3’s Carter Karels if he had an idea when Sanford could return at SEC Media Days on Wednesday.
Sanford was one of Texas A&M’s representatives at SEC Media Days and did provide a positive update on how his recovery is going, taking the time to praise Texas A&M’s medical staff.
“It’s been going along good,” he told Karels. “I’ve been working with the training staff; we’ve got the best training staff and doctors in the country, and they’ve been doing a lot with me. So I’ve been doing pretty good.”
Sanford was forced to undergo surgery after suffering the injury in April, which appeared to be serious. He acknowledged that he was worried he might have to miss the season, but revealed it was not as bad as he initially feared.
“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was,” he explained. “The biggest question was, was I going to be out for the season? But it wasn’t as bad, had a little fibula injury, but I’ve been working on it every day… trying to get back as soon as I can.”
He is coming off the best season of his career, starting the final 10 games of the 2025 season. He played in 13 games total, recording 57 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception, three pass breakups, and two forced fumbles as a junior.
