Early voting for Texas primary runoff elections begins May 18

Early voting begins Monday, May 18 for the runoff elections of contested races from the March primaries. Voters will be deciding who’s on the ballot for federal, state and local races.

The primary runoff election in the state of Texas, including Potter and Randall County, is scheduled for May 26.

Early votes will be submitted May 18 through 22. The last day to receive (not postmarked) an application for a mail ballot is Friday, May 15. The last day to register to vote was April 27.

What’s on the ballot

Federal: U.S. Senate

During the March GOP primaries and one of the most highly anticipated races, incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn earned with 41.89% of the vote while Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had 40.68%. The runoff winner is set to face Democratic candidate James Talarico, who won his spot on the ballot for the November 2026 General Election.

State: Lieutenant Governor

On the Democratic side, voters will determine who will go up against Republican incumbent Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in November. In the March primary, Vikki Goodwin earned 48.01% of the vote, while Marcos Velez had 31.49%.

State: Attorney General

The Texas Attorney General race is still wide open, with Republican candidate Mayes Middleton (39.13% of primary votes) facing Chip Roy (31.6%) and Democratic candidate Joe Jaworski (26.44%) facing Nathan Johnson (48.1%).

State: Railroad Commissioner

In Texas Railroad Commissioner, Republicans will chose between incumbent Jim Wright (32.1% of primary votes) and challenger Bo French (31.75%), one of whom will advance to face Democratic candidate Jon Rosenthal in November.

State: Court of Criminal Appeals Judge

Republican voters will also choose their candidate for Judge, Criminal Appeals Place Three, between Alison Fox, who had 31.3% of votes in the primary, and Thomas Smith, who had 30.69%.

County: Judge and Justice of the Peace

Locally, Paul Herrmann and Claire Hamker Grammer are in a runoff for the Republican ballot spot for Randall County Court at Law Judge No. 1. In the primary, Herrmann received 29.10% of the vote, while Grammer had 43.29%.

And in Potter County Precinct One, Republican voters will select Bryan Tackett or Amanda Mayfield for Justice of the Peace Precinct Number 1. In the primary, Mayfield had 46.43% of the vote, while Tackett received 39.32%. The winner will advance to face Democratic candidate David Martinez.
