The Houston Texans did not start the preseason how they planned.
The first quarter started out well with a scoring drive from the offense to give Houston a 7-3 lead.
But the Los Angeles Chargers put up 20 unanswered points to run away with the 27-7 victory.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans wanted to see physicality, relentlessness and brutality out of his team on Thursday to start off the preseason.
While there were glimpses of that mentality throughout the game, consistency wasn’t there.
“The style of play that I wanted to see, I wanted to see us play physical, and I did not see that the entire game,” Ryans said. “There were some glimpses of us playing physical, but the Chargers, they out physicaled us the entire game. It was not our brand of football. When I speak of playing our style, that’s a physical brand of football, and that was not up to par tonight.”
How they played Thursday is not a true reflection of how the Texans will perform this season, as the starters did not play.
However, it is still disappointing to see Houston put out such a lackluster effort in the first preseason game.
The Texans will have a chance to right the error of their ways on Thursday when they take on the Las Vegas Raiders at Reliant Stadium.
Their next preseason game will be against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thurs. Aug. 20 (7 p.m. / ESPN). The Raiders also had their first preseason game on Thursday which also ended in a loss. Rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza looked strong in his debut and should provide a good test for the Texans defense if he plays.
