In just three weeks, the Texas Tech Red Raiders will open up their 2026 college football season with a matchup against the Abilene Christian Wildcats.
The team is looking strong heading into the 2026 season. Their group of wide receivers is loaded with players such as Malcom Simmons, Michael Dever and Kenny Johnson, while they have a strong group of running backs that includes Cameron Dickey, J’Koby Williams and Quinten Joyner.
The team also has a good group of safeties under Rob Greene. On Friday, Malik Esquerra talked about Greene’s impact and how he has helped him become a better safety.
“Coach Greene’s been amazing,” Esquerra said. “Coach Greene has always been helping us with everything, and in the safety room, you honestly won’t see a lot of bust from us just because we know what we’re doing because Coach Greene has taught us so well.”
Esquerra is entering his third season at Texas Tech and is looking to increase his production for the third straight time. After playing in just two games as a freshman in 2024, he played in all 14 last season, contributing on special teams and as a reserve safety, finishing the year with eight tackles and one pass breakup.
Greene is entering his second season as the Red Raiders’ safeties coach. Last year, Texas Tech led the country with 32 takeaways and surrendered only 190.1 yards per game. He spent six years with the Wofford Terriers as the cornerbacks coach and spent two years with the Tulane Green Wave before joining Texas Tech.
His impact is already being felt, and Texas Tech should be in good shape thanks to his leadership.
