Cowboys ink former Cardinals pick, Bears DB under Eberflus

The Cowboys’ cornerback corps is getting closer by the day to full strength. Trevon Diggs is targeting a September return from last year’s knee injury, highly-touted rookie Shavon Revel, Jr. has just graduated out of the rehab group at team practice, and Caelen Carson is progressing after offseason shoulder surgery.

New father DaRon Bland is back at work this week, and so far, former first-round draft-pick Kaiir Elam is looking to be worth the trade the front office made for him in March. But even with names like Andrew Booth, Josh Butler, and Robert Rochell behind them, it’s still a thin platoon at a position where depth is paramount.

To help the team get through the summer and perhaps offer long-term depth beyond the preseason, the Cowboys have made another addition at the position, signing cornerback Christian Matthew, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Matthew was most recently with the Ravens organization, though he never played a snap. Originally a seventh-round selection by Arizona in 2022, Matthew saw action in 18 games for the Cardinals over the next two seasons before being waived in October 2023.

Chicago and then-head coach Matt Eberflus signed Matthew to the Bears’ practice squad the next day. He got into two games late in the season but played only a handful of snaps on special teams.

But the Valdosta State product apparently showed enough that Eberflus is interested in adding him to the Dallas defense for another extended look.

The 28-year-old Matthew was one of four defensive backs who worked out for the Cowboys after the team’s Monday practice, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. Thomas Graham and Harrison Hand were also in Chicago during the Eberflus regime; Christian Holmes had been with the Commanders and Giants during his three years in the league.
