Corpus Christi Roadrunners to hold 5K fundraiser for Kerr County victims

After hearing the news about heavy flooding in Kerr County that has killed more than 100 people and displayed many others, a local running group decided to organize a 5K race to raise money for the victims.

Corpus Christi Roadrunners will hold its Texas Strong 5K at 7 a.m. July 13 at West Guth Park.

Registration is $20, and 100% of proceeds will go to the Texas flood victims. People may register by visiting bit.ly/TXStrong5K.

Julie McAllister, webmaster for the running group, said while some people in Corpus Christi may not be directly affected by the flooding, they still have heavy hearts for all the lost lives.

“I think people want a way to reach out and help them,” McAllister said in a phone call. “This is a way to allow people to donate, get together and do what we enjoy doing — benefiting someone else.”

As of July 8, around 400 people had registered to participate in the 5K.

McAllister said those who are unable to run have opportunities to volunteer by applying at bit.ly/CC5KVolunteer.

“When you get a group of people together like this, it shows one strong support toward those people up there,” McAllister said. “We can’t all be up there searching or serving meals, but we can do this. They need food, clothing, rent — they need everything. This is a way to help get people back on their feet.”
