Coleman Independent School District announced the hiring of Zach Edington as the interim boys athletic coordinator and football coach for the 2026-2027 school year on Monday.
Edington has been with Coleman ISD and the Bluecat athletic program for the past 22 years, serving as the boys and girls golf coach while also being the offensive coordinator for the past 14 years.
“I’m excited for the opportunity,” Edington said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us this year, and our overall goal is to get one of those four playoff spots. We’re gonna have to get better every day.”
The decision comes less than one week after the Standard-Times confirmed long-time athletic director and football coach John Elder stepped down from his position after 12 years leading the Bluecats.
Coleman struggled as a program for the past two seasons, combining for a 6-16 record after a 2021 season that saw the program reach the third-round of the postseason with a 11-1 record.
After the most recent UIL Reclassification and Realignment, Coleman joins a revamped Class 2A Division I Region II landscape. The Bluecats will compete in District 7-2A DI with Bangs, Brady, Johnson City LBJ, Mason and San Saba. They begin their season on the road against San Angelo Grape Creek at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.
