Two men died after their motorcycles collided on Southeast Third on Saturday night, Aug. 23 in Amarillo, authorities said.
Police released their identities in a community update Monday, Aug. 25, after next of kin were notified, as Shawn Michael Cernik, 50, and Tion James Williams, 47.
The Amarillo Police Department said officers were dispatched about 8 p.m. to the 7700 block of Southeast Third for a reported major crash involving two motorcycles. Officers found an Orange 2014 Harley Davidson Motorcycle and a Gray 2016 Honda VT 1300 Motorcycle at the scene of the crash.
According to a witness, both motorcycles were traveling east on Third at a high rate of speed. The witness told police the rider of the Orange Harley Davidson lost control, causing the bike to veer left in front of the Gray Honda motorcycle. The rider on the Honda motorcycle then struck the Harley on the left side, causing both riders to be thrown from their bikes.
Neither rider was wearing a helmet, and both died at the scene.
The incident is being investigated by APD’s Traffic Investigation Squad.
