Upper Arlington gymnast Madison Pennell was selected the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Girls Athlete of the Week for Feb. 9-15.
Pennell placed first at the OCC meet in floor and vault. She has consistently been scoring over 9’s all season in both events.
Pennell received 62.8% of the vote and was followed by Upper Arlington swimmer Kiera Powers, who received 21.5%, Dublin Jerome gymnast Erica Lee (11.8%) and Thomas Worthington basketball player Zoe Forman (2.8%).
Also nominated were Dublin Jerome swimmer Emmalyn Leonard and Centennial basketball player Kennedy Houston.
Powers won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle at sectional and was on the winning 200 and 400 free relays. Powers was the only swimmer to break 5 minutes in the 500 (4:56.78), winning by more than 14 seconds.
Lee finished first in the all-around (35.925) in the OCC-Cardinal meet. She finished first on uneven bars (8.85), second on vault (8.9) and floor exercise (9.1) and tied for second on balance beam (9.075).
Forman had 18 pts (on 6-of-8 shooting), five rebounds, two blocked shots, two assists, two steals and made 5 of 6 free throws in a 45-34 win over Hilliard Darby.
Leonard won the 200 free and 500 free, was on the winning 400 free relay and helped the 200 free relay to third place in the Worthington sectional.
Houston had 30 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists in a 49-47 win over Africentric in the City League final. She made the game-winning layup with 5.5 seconds left.
The Athlete of the Week voting recognizes athletes across all sports.
Nominations are due Monday mornings for competitions that took place the previous week. The boys poll is live until 4 p.m. Fridays. The girls poll is live until 4 p.m. Saturdays.
