Snider racks up 16 Ks, anchors John Glenn's Division IV district championship

ZOAR −A perfect blend of early offensive fireworks and familiar pitching dominance proved to be the ultimate championship recipe for John Glenn.

The No. 2 seeded Muskies exploded for five early runs and rode another special performance from sophomore virtuoso Kendall Snider to dethrone top-seeded Beaver Local 9-0 in the Division IV district final on Wednesday, May 20 at Tusky Valley High School.

The blowout victory moves a sparkling 25-5 John Glenn squad into the OHSAA regional tournament for the first time since 2022.

Lightning Strike: Muskies ambush Beavers early

The Muskies’ offense set the tone instantly, ambushing Beaver Local with a two-run first inning before tacking on three more in the second frame to build a commanding 5-0 early cushion. According to John Glenn head coach Kyle Porter, striking first wasn’t just helpful−it changed the entire complexion of the championship tussle.

“Getting those early runs was really big tonight…getting out quick really helped everyone relax a bit,” Porter said. “Including Kendall, with the early lead taking the pressure off. And she came through with another great game, like she usually does.”

“Beaver Local is a strong team, and we expected a battle tonight, just think getting the lead helped give us an edge,” Porter added. “And of course we had Kendall Snider in the circle as well, which is another real plus for us.”

Senior Libby Brown, who was a big part of the offensive assault, echoed her coach’s sentiments on the dugout energy.

“It was big getting out to the lead,” Brown said. “I was telling everybody we needed to keep our energy level up…we play better when we do. And that early lead helped with that…it got everybody juiced up and excited.”

The K-Zone: Snider flirts with history, slams the door

With the pressure lifted, Snider went to work. Her historic back-to-back no-hitter streak to open tournament play finally came to an end when Beaver Local managed to scratch out four hits.

However, her shutout streak remained completely untouched. Snider routinely overpowered the Beavers, racking up 16 strikeouts on the night to run her staggering three-game tournament total to 51 Ks.

Family Business: 11-hit avalanche powers the rout

While Snider slammed the door from the circle, the rest of the Muskies’ lineup broke the game wide open. John Glenn hammered out 11 hits in a relentless, balanced team offensive effort.

Brown paced the attack, finishing with an RBI triple and an RBI single, while Addi Babcock delivered a double, a single with an RBI. Josilyn Stashonsky cleared the base paths with two singles and a pair of RBIs. The John Glenn hit parade kept marching with Morgan Harper, Bella Daniels, Olivia Hughes, and Estelle Matheney all collecting RBI base hits.

“It was a team effort,” Brown added. “We played as a family and that’s what it takes in big games like this one tonight.”

For Brown and the John Glenn senior class, capturing the district crown held some extra emotional weight after falling short earlier in their Muskies careers.

“This is exciting, a really big deal making it to regionals,” Brown said. “With being a senior this is extra special for me−we lost in the district finals my sophomore year (2024). So to get it this time is sweet. I’m so excited, we want to keep it going.”

Next Stop” Sweet 16 Bound

John Glenn will look to keep the momentum rolling when they open play in the Division IV regional semifinal action next week on Wednesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at Philo High School when they will meet the winner of the Waverly versus Gallia Academy Southeast district championship game being played on Thursday, May 21.
