Schwebel's closure means central Ohio bakery outpost to shutter

A Licking County bakery will be a casualty of the shuttering of Youngstown-based Schwebel’s Baking Company.

Earlier this week, Schwebel’s announced it would be closing after 120 years in business, with intentions to liquidate the business.

The closure includes the company’s bakery in Hebron and a facility in Cuyahoga Falls. Schwebel’s also has stores and facilities in other states that will be closing.

The company has said it intends to remain operational through July 4.

In its closing announcement, the company said it had not found any potential buyers who were willing to keep the bakery open, which factored into the decision. Other factors included aging equipment and facilities, consumer trends, and labor costs.

Schwebel’s opened the Hebron location after buying the facility on O’Neill Road in 1995.

About 110 employees work at the Hebron facility, according to records from the Ohio Department of Commerce. There are about 1,000 employees across the multiple facilities in the state.

Schwebel’s brands include the company’s namesake, yellow-bagged sliced bread, pita breads, bagels and flatbreads.
