The Tampa Bay Buccaneers never got the chance to see fourth-round pick David Walker take the field during his rookie season, but early signs from the offseason suggest the explosive edge rusher is beginning to remind everyone why the organization was so high on him before his devastating ACL injury.
Walker suffered a torn ACL just days into training camp last summer, ending his rookie campaign before it ever truly began. The injury was especially frustrating considering how much momentum he had built throughout rookie minicamp, OTAs, and the early stages of camp. Head coach Todd Bowles even acknowledged at the time that Walker was making a significant impact and was expected to contribute right away. Now healthy and back on the practice field, Walker has begun flashing the traits that made him one of the most productive pass rushers in college football.
The former Central Arkansas standout arrived in Tampa after compiling 31 sacks and 191 tackles during his collegiate career, earning the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the FCS.
The Buccaneers have remained optimistic about Walker throughout his recovery process. General manager Jason Licht even referred to Walker and safety J.J. Roberts as “bonus draft picks” returning to the roster after both missed their rookie seasons due to injury. While Walker is still working his way back into full football form, his burst off the edge and relentless motor have already stood out during offseason work, as they did during OTAs and the rookie minicamp prior to the ACL tear.
Walker’s return gives the defense another intriguing option in the rotation and could provide the type of depth the team lacked during stretches of the 2025 season.
