RITTMAN ‒ A downtown shop has organized a community cookout and bake sale to provide an opportunity to gather following the July 5 shooting that left four people dead, including police Sgt. Scott Ries.
“Our community has experienced an unimaginable loss, and we want to do our small part to help,” says the announcement posted on the Facebook page of C&J Best Sips & Bakes. “Let’s come together as a community to support one another, show our love, and remind these families that they are not alone.”
The event will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. July 12 in the parking lot of C&J Best Sips & Bakes and Evolution Athletics and Coaching at 8 N. Main St.
Hot dogs will be provided by Evolution Athletics and Coaching. Bakery items and dirty sodas will be available for purchase from C&J Best Sips & Bakes.
The organizers say all proceeds will be donated to the families.
This event is being held in honor of Ries and in memory of Christine McWilliams, 43, and her daughter, McKinley McWilliams, 13, who were also fatally shot in apparent homicides. The suspect and Christine’s former partner, Brandon Fazekas, 38, died from a gunshot wound consistent with suicide.
Four officers from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office were shot, as was a K9 from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred at a house on Chippewa Trail.
