LANCASTER − Two local stores are part of Kroger’s $112 million construction and renovation plans throughout the state.
The company plans to renovate the Kroger at 1141 E. Main St. and is building a new 118,000 square-foot store on Diley Road in Canal Winchester near the Pickerington border.

The Lancaster renovation is projected to cost $1.7 million and the Canal Winchester new store is set to cost $30 million. The Canal Winchester store will be a Kroger Marketplace store and is slated to open around November or December. It will also feature a fuel center.
“With the new stores and renovations as well, we’re doing a lot of work to improve the experience for our customers,” Mark Bruce, head of communications and public affairs for the Kroger Columbus division, said.
The Lancaster renovation will start later this spring and should be finished around fall. Bruce said with the $1.7 million price, the work will touch a lot of the store.
“Typically, you update the decor in the building,” he said. “Kind of the looks, paint and things like that. New tables, new cases, the items that the food is stored in and/or set on in the store will usually be replaced. Typically, you could see improvements to restrooms, improvements to the pickup area and various things like that.
“As far as what the customers sees, you’ll notice just a refreshed decor across the store. And you’ll usually see some new tables and new cases and things like that.”
As for the new Canal Winchester store, construction started late last year.
“Obviously, a growing area in central Ohio,” Bruce said of Canal Winchester. “That northwest Fairfield County area is rapidly growing. And when Kroger looks to expand, we expand in areas where homes are being built. And that is a place where folks are moving to.”
