John Glenn's Colt Emerson is MLB-bound after call-up from Seattle

SEATTLE — The wait is over for Colt Emerson.

Emerson, a 2023 first round MLB draft pick from John Glenn High School, has earned his big league call-up with the Mariners, according to the team’s X account around 5 p.m. on May 17.

A 20-year-old shortstop with some experience at third base, Emerson had been at Triple-A Tacoma since Spring Training. But his favorable impression as the club’s top prospect during that span had many feeling his promotion would come sooner rather than later. It was all but cemented when he signed an 8-year, $95 million contract extension in April a record for a player to not make an MLB appearance.

His stay lasted all of 47 days. He hit .254 with seven homers and 26 RBIs with nine stolen bases and an .812 OPS at Tacoma prior to his promotion.

He hit .385 with 16 homers and 78 RBIs and an .841 OPS at three minor league stops in 2025, including at Double-A Everett. He hit .293 in 40 games at Class-A Modesto.

The move comes with veteran Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford hitting .217 in 169 at-bats.

Emerson became the first player in Muskingum Valley League history to be drafted in the first round of the first-year player draft after being named Gatorade Player of the Year in Ohio. He was also a member of the Team USA 18-and-under team.

He was named the Times Recorder’s top male athlete since 2000.
