The annual National Matches at Camp Perry in Port Clinton are underway, bringing several thousand competitors to northern Ohio to take part in a marksmanship tradition that dates back to 1907.
The Civilian Marksmanship Program hosts four weeks of marksmanship competitions at its headquarters location, Camp Perry. Following a week of Bullseye Pistol, Smallbore and Air Gun events, the focus shifted to High Power Rifle and Vintage Rifle before concluding with Mid- and Long-Range competitions, where competitors test their skills at distances up to 1,000 yards.
In the past week, James Fox, age 41, of Bend, OR, attended his 16th year shooting at the CMP National Matches. He won the CMP National Service Rifle Championships in 2025 and again in 2026. He is the first civilian to do that, and the only civilian to win four national championships.
