Power rarely looks threatening at first. It often arrives disguised as progress.
That is exactly how most communities are being asked to view the rapid expansion of data centers. These projects are marketed as economic development jobs, investment, and modernization. But that framing is incomplete, and increasingly, it is misleading.
Today’s data centers are not just commercial infrastructure. The U.S. Department of Defense is actively integrating private cloud systems into military operations to achieve what it calls “decision dominance,” the ability to process intelligence and act faster than any adversary. Billions of dollars are already flowing into these systems through federal defense contracts.
At the same time, the military is constructing massive hyperscale data facilities directly on U.S. bases, designed to support artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and real-time battlefield operations. These are not abstract concepts; they are active components of modern warfare.
More importantly, adversaries have taken notice. Data centers tied to cloud providers have already been targeted in overseas drone and missile strikes because of their role in supporting military intelligence. That marks a turning point. Infrastructure once considered civilian is now being treated as strategic terrain.
That reality has serious implications at the local level.
When a community hosts infrastructure that can be linked directly or indirectly to national defense systems, it is no longer making a purely economic decision. It is accepting a level of strategic risk that deserves public scrutiny and informed debate.
Canton and Stark County residents should be asking harder questions. Who benefits? Who controls the data? And what risks are being introduced?
Because in an era where data is power, the facilities that control it are no longer neutral.
They are part of the battlefield.
