MILLERSBURG – After 33 years of service, Holmes County Sheriff Tim Zimmerly has decided to retire, effective July 31.
Originally, his term would have ended in January 2029, but since he is resigning before the halfway point, the current term is shortened to end in January 2027. This will allow voters to elect a new sheriff on the November 2026 general election ballot.
Since he is a Republican officeholder, state law authorizes the county Republican Central Committee to appoint a successor to complete his current term, and to nominate a candidate for sheriff for the November ballot.
Under state law, the county commissioners can make a temporary appointment to fill the vacancy from Aug. 1 until the county Republican Central Committee can meet. The Central Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 6 in the conference room of the Millersburg Comfort Inn, 1102 Glen Drive, Millersburg, to vote on an appointment to fill the current vacancy, and to nominate a candidate for sheriff to represent the party on the November ballot, according to the announcement.
The public may attend the meeting of the Central Committee. Other political parties may nominate a candidate for the November ballot, and independent candidates may circulate a petition to qualify for the ballot.
The Republican Central Committee invites letters of interest and résumés from any qualified applicants who want to be considered for the appointment. Such letters and résumés may be mailed to the Party Central Committee at Post Office Box 471, Millersburg, OH 44654 by July 20.
The qualifications required by the Ohio Revised Code for serving as a county sheriff can be found in Section 311.01.
