History Spotlight on the courthouse

Fremont’s First Courthouse, built 1820s.

Amazingly, Fremont’s first courthouse still remains, as seen here between buildings on Croghan Street across from Birchard Library. It was built in the 1820s on the northwest corner of Birchard and Park Avenue, and was moved a few years later to this high ground above Croghan Street.

When the current courthouse was built in 1843, St. John’s Lutheran had services here until their first church was built in 1861. Apartments now occupy the nearly 200-year-old building. The stone embankment in front probably dates back to when it was moved to this location about 1830. (Submitted by Larry Michaels and Krista Michaels)
