Grove City softball player Tommi Ewing was selected the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Girls Athlete of the Week for May 11-17.
In five games, Ewing batted .643 with nine hits, including five home runs and two doubles, 10 RBIs, nine runs and no strikeouts. She had two homers and for RBIs against Olentangy Liberty and two homers and five RBIs against Thomas Worthington. She also didn’t commit an error from her shortstop position.
Ewing received 58.6% of the vote and was followed by Thomas Worthington softball player Ireland Bulger, who received 28.4%, and Dublin Coffman softball player Madison O’Malley (9.1%).
Also nominated were Centerburg softball player Abby Herren, Gahanna Lincoln softball player Kira Bailey, Hamilton Township softball player Logan Baker and Mount Gilead softball player Livie Brannon.
Bulger, the runner-up, went 6 for 8 in three games with two home runs, a double, three singles and eight RBIs.
O’Malley batted .562 (9 for 16) for the week with a .611 on-base percentage, .875 slugging percentage, two doubles and a home run. In the last two games, she was 6 for 9 with two doubles and a homer. She also has 21 putouts in 23 total chances for a .913 fielding percentage.
Herren set the state record for home runs in a single season, hitting her 24th in a 9-5 win at Loudonville. She tied the record the day before in a 12-1 win over Marion Pleasant.
Bailey went 9 for 9 in three games with 16 stolen bases, including six against Granville and five each against Lakewood and Watkins Memorial. She also had four RBIs and no strikeouts.
Baker went 6 for 8 with four doubles and five RBIs in wins over Whitehall and Beechcroft.
Brannon went 4 for 5 with a double, home run and six RBIs in a 16-10 win over East Knox.
The Athlete of the Week voting recognizes athletes across all sports.
Nominations are due Monday mornings for competitions that took place the previous week. The boys poll is live until 4 p.m. Fridays. The girls poll is live until 4 p.m. Saturdays.
