Columbus attorney Ajmeri Hoque made history in the Nov. 4 election by becoming the first Muslim judge elected in Ohio, according to unofficial results from the Franklin Count Board of Elections.
Hoque, who ran unopposed, won a seat as a Franklin County Municipal Court judge, replacing James Green, who is retiring when his term ends at the end of 2025 after more than 30 years on the bench.
Hoque, 41, was born in Bangladesh and immigrated to New York with her parents as a toddler. In addition to being the first Muslim judge in Ohio, she will be the first naturalized citizen to be a judge in Franklin County.
She will take office in January.
The Dispatch profiled Hoque in March when it became clear she would be running unopposed for the Municipal Court seat.
