DNA links Canton man to 2016 Jackson Township home invasion, stabbing

JACKSON TWP. ‒ A Canton man’s February traffic arrest has landed him in jail, accused of a home invasion and stabbing nearly a decade earlier.

Township police say they arrested Angus Webendorfer on May 21, charging him with felony attempted murder, aggravated burglary and felonious assault tied to a home invasion on Aug. 4, 2016, in the 5900 block of Kentview Avenue NW.

According to a news release from Jackson police, a thief entered the woman’s Kentview residence through an unlocked door back in 2016. The victim awoke to a man standing over her with a knife.

The burglar stabbed her numerous times, stole some of her belongings and fled, police said.

Some of the stolen items were later located in the street. The recovered items were sent to the state lab and sufficient DNA was found for comparison, Jackson police said.

No arrests were made but the DNA profile was put into the national database.

In February, the Ohio State Highway Patrol arrested Webendorfer during a traffic stop and pursued several charges. Due to felony arrest, his DNA was collected and entered into the national database, police said.

In May, Jackson police obtained a DNA database match to the 2016 home invasion. This match came from the DNA collected from Webendorfer by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and was matched to evidence collected from the scene of the home invasion by Jackson police, investigators said.

Police Chief Mark Brink thanked the Jackson Township Detective Bureau, Ohio State Patrol and U.S. Marshal’s Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force for their work on the case.
