Bengals aren’t shying away from contract extension talk

The Cincinnati Bengals have two big contract extension questions hanging over the upcoming training camp.

Nothing as dire as the Trey Hendrickson standoffs of the last few years by any means. But figuring out how to do contracts with DJ Turner and Dax Hill is a critical point of the offseason.

And to their credit, the Bengals aren’t ducking questions about those two contract situations, specifically.

“It’s something that we’ll have to work through,” Blackburn said, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic. “Love those guys. Love DJ, love Dax, and we obviously have our work cut out for us as to how to try to figure out how to retain them while we have the other commitments that we have.”

Generic? Sure, but it’s easier to take the Bengals at their word after the offseason they’ve had when thinking about the modern, all-in moves.

And they certainly know what they have in Turner. He’s their first lockdown boundary corner in a long time. That comes with a huge cost, but after he showed up to voluntary workouts to set a good example, there’s no reason to think that it won’t work out well.

It’s actually Hill who might be a little more complicated. He wants to play the boundary and has been better there. But he has the versatility to play in the slot and looking at the team’s offseason moves, they might make him play there. There’s a money difference that comes with that, most likely, so contract talk hurdles, too.

Either way, the Bengals are open about the process and, apparently, open to anything these days, so there’s no reason for worry that contract drama again hurts a summer stretch for the club.
